Journalist Markham has written eight chapters that could each stand alone as an essay on the management of a key species?black bear, white-tailed deer, bald eagle, wild turkey, river otter, Canada goose, red-cockaded woodpecker, and red wolf?found in Tennessee. Each chapter tells the history of the species as it relates to the state. The efforts of many, including government and private agencies, as well as important individual contributions in management and recovery, are detailed for each case. A ninth chapter examines management efforts involving less-appreciated but still important animals, such as bats, salamanders, snakes, voles, and turtles. Statewide funding programs and other funding sources are briefly described. A hopeful epilog; appendix of endangered, threatened, and in-need-of-management species list (for Tennessee); notes; and a brief bibliography conclude the book. Although the information about each species is plentiful, this is not a field guide but an excellent wildlife management story.
