The 19 members of this Nazi rogues' gallery represent the darkest and most pathological corners of the Hitler phenomenon. Though lively and interesting, these informal portraits of such individuals as Julius Streicher, Theodor Morell, Joseph Goebbels, and Ilse Koch fail to push out beyond the predictable explanations of blind ambition, fanatical devotion, and slavish obedience. This is by no means a representative cross section of the Nazi power elite. Snyder seems more interested in vilification and sensationalism than in enlightenment and exegesis.
