This is the catalog for one of the most important exhibitions of Latin American art ever conceived. Rasmussen is the director of MoMA's International Program, which has played a significant role in the encouragement of artists from the Southern Hemisphere. His introduction is followed by essays from 14 distinguished scholars, including noted Latin Americanist Edward Sullivan, Fatima Bercht, and Charles Merewether. Their contributions range from a broad historical survey by Sullivan to entries on specific artists and movements. Key individuals, such as Armando Reveron, Xul Solar, and Tarsila do Amaral, receive substantial reevaluation. The Mexican muralists are also treated, but most interesting are those essays that identify trail-blazing contemporary artists. The forces of modernism in Latin American painting and sculpture are traced, with the aid of excellent reproductions, in meaningful historical terms. Essential for academic, research, and specialized art libraries.
