From the Back Cover

"George Venn is the latest in a long series of gifted writers from the Pacific Northwest. In Marking the Magic Circle, he engages his native region with passion and clarity, always seeking routes toward sanity, compassion, and beauty." William Kittredge

***
"This is a somewhat eccentric personal anthology, a declaration of identity and territory as personal as a journal, but made up not of casual jottings but of carefully worked essays, poems, stories, autobiographical narratives, and even translations from the Chinese. It is rich, various, and in places striking." Wallace Stegner
***
"This book speaks with an authentic voice, a placed voice. It is from somewhere, which in our situation makes it rare and useful." Tom Lyon, Editor, Western American Literature
***
"If there was ever doubt, Marking the Magic Circle establishes George Venn as much more than a regional writer of place. His is an important voice that deserves our attention and should earn wide recognition." Vi Gale, Publisher, Prescott Street Press
