Reviews

Eagle and three other square-riggers were originally built by Germany as sail training vessels just before World War II. Horst Vessel , now Eagle , was taken over by the U.S. Coast Guard shortly after the war and is still serving as a sail training vessel. This book not only commemorates its 50 years under sail but is also a patriotic tribute to the Coast Guard from its founding as the Revenue Service to its present-day role of search and rescue. Putz gives plenty of detail on the history and inner workings of this beautiful square-rigged ship. There are photos of the ship under sail, as well as good illustrations and diagrams of the ship's rigging, etc. The emphasis is on the ship as a modern training vessel. A worthwhile purchase for public libraries. Dolphin Book Club selection. John Kenny, San Francisco P.L.
