Reviews

Not a narrative of the Jewish community of Venice, this is rather a collection of studies on selected aspects of Venetian Jewish history and life from about the mid-12th to the mid-20th century. Among the topics treated are the origins and development of the ghetto (the word probably of Venetian origin); and Jews, Christians, and moneylending. The author does not place topics in a broad socioeconomic context, and his general knowledge of medieval and early modern history appears sketchy. Vignettes from the lives of ordinary people enliven the text, and the translation is smooth and exceptionally lucid. Bennett D. Hill, St. Anselm's Abbey, Washington, D.C.
