Informed that a mysterious man in a trenchcoat has been following Sinclair for weeks, her commanding officer, David Hamilton, fears a leak by their partners in the French Resistance; he also worries about the opposition of a British commodore who, furious that a woman has been enlisted in the operation, tries to sway Winston Churchill against it. A barrage of conspiracy theories likely to leave the reader skeptical somewhat mar the set-up for an otherwise strong resolution, but the narrative is generally plausible and engrossing.

Eden's story is based on The Violins of Autumn , the memoirs of Valerie Sinclair, an actual British spy, who was chosen for espionage because of her photographic memory. The novel takes place in England in June 1944, just after the Allied invasion of Normandy, and Sinclair's mission is to locate information on Germany's development of the atomic bomb. The underlying theme is the war for information, even between allies, and there is an unknown "spy" who protects Sinclair and saves her from danger. Told with flashbacks and dream sequences, and with frequent use of the heroine's "living camera" memory, the story can be confusing at times, especially to anyone unfamiliar with wartime England. Soon to be a film, this first novel by a movie producer and scriptwriter is recommended as an additional purchase for larger libraries.
