ELLIOT STUDT, a social worker, is a member of the senior research staff of the Center for the Study of Law and Society at the University of California, Berkeley. SHELDON L. MESSINGER is Vice Chairman of the Center and is a sociologist. THOMAS P. WILSON is assistant professor of sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
