Book by Barford, George

This profusely illustrated survey provides a solid but prosaic overview, with concise biographies of major architects and descriptions of their work. The book commences with an overly simplistic introduction to architecture"how it began"before focusing in on the topic at hand. The title is somewhat misleading: the author concentrates on individual architects and buildings rather than trends and theory and provides few insights into the subject, treating such architects as Yamasaki with as much deference as Le Corbusier. Despite these limitations, the book serves as a useful primer for the architectural novice, and with its numerous photographs illustrates the diversity within the modern movement. H. Ward Jandl, National Park Service, Washington, D.C.
