After Mr. Thomas the magician performs at her birthday party, Vicky asks him to magically fix a little bird's broken wing.

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Mr. Thomas, a conjuror, performs magic at Vicky's birthday party, where she assists him by saying the magic words, "Hey Presto!" That night Vicky dreams that Mr. Thomas and she perform magic together, making balloons, butterflies, candy, and birds bubble up from a pot. The next morning, when her magic words fail to heal a bird's broken wing, she takes it to Mr. Thomas who says that this needs a different kind of magic and mends the wing with tape. The text ends with, "Which was the real magic, magic man?" Pastel watercolors outlined in ink are approriately surreal, but the characters are static, and facial features resemble Joan Walsh Anglund's style. The text is disjointed, and the message about magic and reality is unclear. Eaton addresses the distinction between performing magic and reality, but not whether magic is real or a trick. The subject of magic deserves a better performance. --Jean Gaffney, Dayton and Montgomery County Public Library, Ohio
