Who were the ancient Egyptians? Did they grow their own food? Did children go to school? What religion did they have? What was it like to live in ancient Egypt?
This series takes an exciting look at religion, history, and culture through the everyday lives of people from all over the world. Using color photographs and detailed illustrations, each book helps young people ask questions and leads them toward a better understanding of a particular historical era, faith, or civilization.

Joanna Defrates is an Egyptologist and lecturer with an MA from Cambridge University. She is the author of many books for young people about the ancient world.
Grade 3-5-- A book with an annoying format. Each two-page illustrated chapter is titled with a question, e.g., ``Who Were the Egyptians?'' ``Did the Egyptians Eat Well?'' The 17 chapters, which cover such topics as religion, warfare, farming, and rulers, provide standard information, adding nothing original. Color photographs and illustrations are adequate, but again the same kind of thing can be found in many other books about Egypt, and is much more attractively displayed in Ancient Egypt (HBJ, 1989) by George Hart. An index and brief glossary are provided, but there is no bibliography. --David N. Pauli, Missoula Public Library, MT
