Synopsis
Eastern Christians (both Catholic and Orthodox) are not, as a recent commentator pointed out, a dusty historical footnote or quaint ethnic ghetto, but are a living and vibrant church to which Western Christians are turning by the thousands in search of spiritual nourishment undiluted by sentimentality, liturgical posturing and a trendy accommodation to prevailing tastes. In 1987 more than 2000 evangelical Christians became Orthodox "en masse" because they recognized the solidity and grandeur of the Eastern tradition. Author Hart, a minister of the United Methodist Church, became absorbed with the riches of Eastern Christianity some years ago while exploring approaches to liturgical renewal within his own denomination – so absorbed, in fact, that he taught himself the art of iconography.
