Constructed and operated by volunteer subscription, the one room school symbolizes the value early north Texas settlers placed on education and community. The rural school served, not only as the place children were taught the three R’s, it also was the center for social activities and meetings. The one room school played a significant role in the life of a community, usually serving as a polling place, a meeting place for discussing the issues of the day and often as a religious center until a church could be built.
One room schools sprang up in Collin County, as the early settlers built schoolhouses to accommodate one teacher instructing several grades of children living on remote Blackland Prairie farms. By the 1930's most one room schools in the area closed down as better roads and transportation led to the consolidation of schools and the formation of tax supported school districts.
A research project of the Heritage Farmstead Museum which was funded by The Summerlee Foundation, The One Room School In Collin County, Texas tells the story of how early settlers in this area provided for the education of their children when writing slates, inkwells and potbellied stoves were the norm, long before there were roads, electricity, plumbing, and the other conveniences that most students now take for granted.
