In this largely autobiographical story, the lively and nonstop dialogue portrays the excitement, humor, and independence of a hard-working steamboat crew on the upper Mississippi.

Richard Bissel (1913-77) learned about the pleasures and dangers of towboating on the Mississippi during eight years as deckhand, mate, and pilot. A Harvard graduate, he left the river in 1945 to manage his family's business in Dubuque, Iowa, and to become an author of national acclaim.
"[Bissell's] stories are first-rate and expertly told, his dialogue a constant delight.... It would be impossible to find any part of his book dull or inexpert." -- Herald Tribune Book Review
