Media insider David Alexander reveals clever, cagey, creative methods for getting your story out with the right "spin." Learn how TV, radio and newspapers choose which stories to cover; which are the most influential media execs to contact (and whom to avoid); how to write irresistible news releases; how to exploit busy, competitive reporters; how the best media manipulators have used dramatic guerrilla methods to get their messages plastered across the world stage; and much more.

Television news also loves confrontational picketing in which the picketers harass opponents or try to intrude on their opponents' staged news event. I call it confrontational piggybacking, and it, too, works to get your message into the media. Here's an example: the mall backers hold a news conference to talk about a proposed new mall, and you have your spokesperson attend the meeting. At the right time, he or she stands up and disrupts the conference with a few well-chosen words. Your spokesperson has to be careful not to come across sounding or looking like a nut. He must look and sound intelligent. That's why I suggest a few well-chosen words-something the media can turn around with and get a reaction from the other side.
Think of the media as your free "gateway" to the public. You don't have to sit back and take what it feeds you on the nightly news or in the morning newspaper. Now, you can "feed" the media. It happens every day. To some extent it's expected by the media because it depends on news releases and phone tips to come up with a majority of the stories it covers.
Manipulation by the press of people and events is nothing new. Here's an opportunity to turn the tables and learn the tactics of the "spin doctors" (professional media manipulators). How You Can Manipulate the Media gives you the low-down on the inner workings of the media, what they are hot for, who to talk to and how to get your story out there. Complete with information on creating press releases, conducting interviews and juicy examples of successful "guerrilla methods," this book will help give you the tools you need to get your story covered and your cause heard. -- From The WomanSource Catalog & Review: Tools for Connecting the Community for Women; review by Ilene Rosoff
