Patterson asks the question: What is the place of spirituality in education? In the seven essays that compose When Learned Men Murder, he pursues this question in relation to today's colleges and universities.

The title of this book was inspired by the Wannsee Conference, which was convened in Berlin in 1942. At that conference Nazi Germany's "Learned men", graduates of the best universities in Central Europe, gathered to work out the Final Solution to the Jewish "problem". David Patterson asks the key question: What had gone wrong with the education system that conferred its highest degrees on these men? In the seven essays that compose When Learned Men Murder, he pursues this question in relation to today's colleges and universities. In so doing, Patterson turns not to studies and theories developed by the education professionals, but instead draws on the humanities and the liberal arts in which he has worked (particularly philosophy, literature, and Jewish thought) to see what these disciplines say about the relationship between the pursuit of higher education and the embrace of a higher humanity. -- Midwest Book Review
