It is by the contours that the distinctive quality of each suffering is conveyed, with precise and stirring differentiation. For instance, compare the quivering, delicately lumpy contour of the Magdalene's face with the no less sensitive but stronger, more fibrous outline of Christ's body-- the accuracy of the emotion experienced and recreated in each case. The hands and the feet of the Crucified are, of course, the most immediate in their impact.
