The Kids Are Authors competition was established in 1986 to encourage children to read and to become involved in the creative process of writing and illustrating. Since then, hundreds of thousands of children have written, designed, and illustrated their own books as participants in the KAA competition. The winning books in the annual competition are published by PAGES Publishing Group under its Willowisp Press imprint.
Lunch with Alex was created by teacher Nancy Lucas's first-grade class of emerging readers to humorously help them remember "short a" sounds. It was one of the many such books written in the school year by these children, who proudly shared them with each other and read them aloud to children in other classes, to teachers, and to administrators, extending and reinforcing necessary language skills.
Under the guidance of Mrs. Lucas, the children used tempera paints, brushes, and sponges cut in various shapes to illustrate their story.
