This revised and updated work (1st ed., Watson-Guptill, 1988) is a somewhat handy reference source for chronologically pinpointing greater and lesser events concerning rock music bands and solo acts. The guide is arranged alphabetically by group or solo artist surname, and each short entry (rarely more than a sentence or two) contains a wealth of bite-sized information. The entries for group acts list personnel. While generally informative and even fun to read, especially from the 1980s forward, some minor discrepancies (for example, rock legend Gene Vincent's date of death) are nagging. The London-based authors select acts popular on both sides of the Atlantic, yet there are questionable omissions: Freddie Cannon, Joe Ely, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds, among others. The British orientation may limit the book's desirability for American libraries. Still, it would find use among fans interested in the general development of their favorite groups and soloists. An optional purchase for libraries that don't have the earlier edition.
