YA-- Concise chapters, factual data, a logical arrangement, and references to additional resources make this an excellent choice for reports. Themes such as the relationship of hunger, alcoholism, or mental illness to homelessness unite the summaries of relevant laws and testimonies before Congressional committees. Federal legislation and Supreme Court cases are analyzed briefly. The last half of the book is composed of annotated lists of organizations and reference material (both print and nonprint) complete with addresses and phone numbers so that more information can be readily obtained. The text is accessible and to the point. The book is dispassionate and objective, particularly when compared to the discussion style of Hyde's The Homeless: Profiling the Problem (Enslow, 1989) or Landau's The Homeless (Messner, 1987) . This excellent, tightly constructed work was compiled for an audience interested in locating substantive background information sources dealing with the problem of homelessness in America. Hombs, Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless and co-author (with the late Mitch Snyder) of Homelessness in America ( LJ 4/1/83), reviews the subject and provides up-to-date references: source lists of involved individuals and organizations, pertinent federal legislation and court cases, excerpts from selected relevant documents, annotated bibliographies of related print and non-print materials, including accessible computerized databases. Very useful and highly recommended for general public and academic libraries.
