She was as much the witty, funny, warmhearted, generous, vulnerable, and lovable woman as she was the determined, domineering activist, shrewd political strategist, and manipulative propagandist. People who met her often expected the worst, fearing that they would confront the severe, man-hating horror the newspapers told them they would find. Instead they were shocked and delighted to meet a down-to-earth, gracious woman deeply interested in their problems and just as thoroughly committed to persuading them that woman suffrage was the best way to remedy them.
