Albrecht Durer has been universally acclaimed for his nature studies, especially his exquisitely detailed watercolors of small animals. In this ambitious work, which is encyclopedic in scope, Eisler introduces the reader to the full range of animals that appear in Durer's paintings, prints, and drawings--literally hundreds of examples in every size, shape, and variety. Separate chapters are devoted to wild beasts, farm animals, horses, birds, dogs, insects, and sea creatures as well as mythological creatures. Throughout, the author considers how Durer's use of animals was related to the symbolic and scientific traditions of his time. Eisler's copious scholarship takes us beyond Durer's artistic triumphs to give us a fuller understanding of an important facet of late medieval and Renaissance culture and a crucial time in the history of science.
