Under the diverse influences of fauves, cubists, symbolists, and expressionists, Russian painting flourished in the early 20th century. The trend continued after the October Revolution of 1917, for many artists equated the Revolution with creative freedom; the 1930s all but obliterated this spirit. This book is the catalog of a 1988 Hirshhorn Museum exhibit jointly sponsored by the United States and the USSR. Fifty artistsamong them Bakst, Chagall, Malevich, Goncharova, Kandinsky, Tatlin, and Rodchenko, plus numerous artists less familiar in the Westare represented by good color plates that bring to life the wide range of styles in the exhibition.
