This book is heaven for brass band aficionados. The authors have lovingly traced the evolution of the American band from its inception to the end of World War I, focusing on its sociologicalrather than purely musicalaspects. The relationship of band and band leader to community is clarified by the Hazens' basically democratic approach; even a miniscule ten-piece band from Oswayo, Pennylvania is treated with affectionate respect. The book is lavishly illustrated with archival photographs, programs, and other documents. The impressive scholarship fortunately does not encumber the prose, which is lively and fast-paced throughout. Highly recommended. Larry Lipkis, Music Dept., Moravian Coll., Bethlehem, Pa.
