Reviews

Stella, the early-20th-century Italian-American artist best known for his Futurist paintings of New York City and the Brooklyn Bridge, was a prolific artist whose oeuvre contains many lesser-known works in a variety of styles and media. This monograph, with 81 black-and-white and 50 color reproductions, has been published in conjunction with an exhibition of Stella's drawings and collages showing at the Smithsonian and in Boston and Fort Worth this year. Moser's thoughtful text considers Stella as a complex and highly individual artist who took from many different artistic movements those elements of style that allowed him to express his personal vision in a highly symbolic process, which Moser likens to poetry. While not difficult to follow, the argument presupposes some basic knowledge of leading artistic movements and poets. Suitable for interested laypersons, as well as scholars and specialists.
