Reviews

TreePeople, an organization dedicated to promoting urban forestry, has compiled a guide to help city dwellers ("citizen Foresters") start or get involved with tree planting projects. The guide explains such practical matters as what species to plant where and how to nurture young trees, but perhaps more importantly, it also provides case-study examples (from Southern California communities, in particular) of how tree-planting campaigns were started. The problems of arousing community support, getting funding, and handling team organization and public relations are some of the key elements discussed. The book concludes with a questionnaire and workbook for local groups to use. While less technical and comprehensive a discussion of this subject than Shading Our Cities , edited by Gary Moll and Sara Ebenrech ( LJ 12/89), this will be an excellent citizens' guide to include in city library collections.
