More than five million Americans suffer from severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia or manic depression. And each of these individuals has in some way affected their siblings or children, resulting in a huge group that could potentially encounter what Marsh and Dickens term SaC (Sibling and Child) syndrome. SaC afflicts young people who have close contact with a relative suffering from a mental disorder. Unable to understand the nature of these mental health problems, the child or sibling grows up feeling confused, rejected, and grief stricken. SaC later reveals itself in adult insecurities, anxieties, and other destructive behaviors. The authors' keys to beating SaC include confronting the past, getting beyond the denial of one's painful experiences, and identifying those emotional patterns that indicate the syndrome.
