In ``Jack Still'' Jefferson Davis, hearing of the Yankees fleeing Bull Run, makes a decision that shakes the faith of the Confederate officer bearing the news; while in ``Chickamauga'' two childhood friends walk 20 miles to enlist in a war from which only one would return. ``Bloodhounds'' tells of the punishment of a Confederate army deserter, while ``Debt of Honor'' recounts the reprieve of a sentry caught sleeping. This collection should appeal to students of literature as well as historians and Civil War buffs, for among the writers included are F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, J. P. Marquand, and Owen Wister. Brief biographies of the authors are a useful addition.
