Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 2. Teachers will welcome this treatment of David Adler's book (Holiday House, 1993) for listening centers during Black History Month, Women's History Month, and the rest of the year. Adler presents a simple, clear biography of Rosa Parks, exploring both her childhood and adult life. He makes it obvious that her role in the Civil Rights movement did not begin and end on a bus, but rather lasted throughout her life. The male narrator reads clearly and unemotionally, presenting the facts as Adler reports them so listeners can draw their own conclusions. One side of the tape has page-turn signals, the other does not. A good addition to collections needing materials highlighting people whose simple actions have led to significant change in our nation.

Do you wish you had more time to read to your child? Check out these book/tape combinations by Live Oak Media. The Picture Book Biography series includes the lives of George Washington, Helen Keller and Jesse Owens. This volume is the story of Rosa Parks, who helped spark the Civil Rights movement by keeping her seat on a Montgomery bus. One side plays the narration straight through, while the other includes "page-turn" signals so nonreaders can follow along. The performance, like the text, is simple, direct and clear. However, if you prefer a warm, intimate, personal delivery, you won't find it here. The voice, like Adler's text, sticks to the facts. S.P. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
