Dorothy Jean Hulst, a free-lance writer, had as one of her favorite books As A Man Thinketh, by James Allen. In this short volume, Allen expressed his belief that an individual, through the power of positive thought, forms his or her character and consequent happiness. Hulst was inspired by the content of Allen s book but tired of the mental exercise required to substitute feminine equivalents for masculine terms. Using a pencil, she crossed out all masculine references, replacing them with feminine words. The result, As A Woman Thinketh, allows women to identify directly and personally with Allen s concepts.
FROM THE AUTHOR:
Calmness of Mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom. It is the result of ling and patient effort in self-control . . . The calm woman, having learned how to govern herself, knows how to adapt herself to others; and they, in turn, reverence here spiritual strength, and feel that they can learn of her and rely upon her . . . The strong, calm woman is always loved and revered. She is like a shade-giving tree in a thirsty land, or a sheltering rock in a storm.

After the unexpected death of his father, he left school at age fifteen in order to help support his family. For the next twenty-three years, Allen worked, read, and observed the world around him. At age thirty-eight, he wrote From Poverty to Power, one of the first motivational books ever written. His next book, As a Man Thinketh, established his reputation as an inspirational writer. Although his writing career lasted only ten years, until his death in 1912, Allen produced twenty titles, which continue to motivate and inspire people all over the globe today.
