About the Author

Parke Rouse, Jr. was born in Smithfield and spent summers on his grandparents' Berry Hill Farm in Isle of Wight. Graduating from Washington and Lee University, he served as Sunday editor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch before joining the staff of Colonial Williamsburg. In 1957 his state chose him to direct its 350th anniversary, centering at Jamestown.
