Grade 3-6 Bill's mom's check-up reveals she has cancer. Bill describes what cancer means and how his family is affected by it. His father answers Bill's questions, which reflect the queries of all children who are anxious about a family member's cancer. Bold print key words are further defined in the glossary. The American Cancer Society's seven warning signals for cancer are clearly stated (although one of them is stated to be "tummy trouble"), as well as activity suggestions for parents to do with children. Eight easy, nutritious recipes are also included. The illustrations are amateurish and grim, but the reassuring tone of the text and the easy-to-read format make the book appropriate for school libraries, classrooms, doctors' offices and hospital patient libraries.
