Martin Buber (1878 1965) was an Austrian Jewish and, ultimately, Israeli philosopher best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a form of existentialism centered on the distinction between the IThou relationship and the IIt relationship. Born in Vienna, Buber came from a family of observant Jews, but broke with Jewish custom to pursue secular studies in philosophy. He produced writings about Zionism and worked with various bodies within the Zionist movement extensively over a nearly 50 year period spanning his time in Europe and the Near East. In 1923, Buber wrote his famous essay on existence, I and Thou , and in 1925, he began translating the Hebrew Bible into the German language, seeking to reflect the rhythms and thought patterns of the Hebrew language. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature ten times, and the Nobel Peace Prize seven times. 'Meetings' sets before the reader a glittering series of reflections and narratives, it seeks not to describe his life in its full entirety, but rather to convey some of his defining moments of uncertainty, revelation and meaning. Recalling his questionings on the infinity of space and time which nearly drove him to the point of suicide at the age of fourteen, his adolescent 'seduction' by Nietzsche's work, his hero-worship of Ferdinand Lassalle and his love of Bach's music, 'Meetings' has no equal as a portrait of an unique intellect in moments of light and in the shadow of death. Like Buber's great works 'Between Man and Man' and 'The Way of Man', it evokes a tactile, gritty concept of meaning ultimately found, as Maurice Friedman writes in his introduction, "not in conceptual or systematic thought but in the four-dimensional reality of events and meetings". ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 115 pages.
