This fascinating book covers two aspects of Pennsylvania Station. First, it contains a reprint of a rare book published in 1912, shortly after completion of the station: "History of the Engineering Construction and Equipment of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's New York Terminal," by William Couper. This book is packed with information about every aspect of the building of the Pennsylvania Station -- from engineering to architectural motifs -- and is illustrated throughout with black and white photos and diagrams of the building and the tunnels. There are also many rare photos of the leading personnel of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the engineering firms. Second, Mr. Westing has written a detailed and well-illustrated analysis of the side-rod drive electric locomotives that were used to bring trains through the tunnels. Without these engines, Pennsylvania Station might well have been a failure. Includes rosters of all DD1 and Pennsy geared side-rod drive electric locomotives and LIRR DD1 locomotives. With schematics of the locomotives, track plans, and maps of the High-Line and the Manhattan Transfer. 184 pages with index.
