The way corporations cultivate their future leaders--a crucial element of long-term planning--is entering an era of radical change. There is a shift away from traditional methods that benefit only a few towards a leadership development strategy that will drive the flexibility, commitment, and competitiveness of an entire organization. Leading business thinkers Albert Vicere and Robert Fulmer have compiled an insightful work that examines this new trend--and offers some important solutions.
Leadership by Design synthesizes into a single, exceptionally useful volume the most influential ideas that shape the current thinking on leadership development. An up-to-date review of the major literature on leadership development, this comprehensive reference catalogs the best practices currently available, and offers a hands-on framework to help companies design unique--and effective--models for inspiring and enabling their future leaders.
With its emphasis on real-world tools and guidelines, this book is sure to become a standard reference for human resource professionals, senior managers, and ambitious employees looking to develop their own leadership potential.

Robert M. Fulmer is the W. Brooks George Professor of Business Administration at the College of William and Mary. "In Leadership By Design, Vicere and Fulmer systematically identify strategic leadership development issues, articulate various approaches to leadership development, and cite examples of successful programs. The greatest strength of Leadership By Design is its consolidation of material that has previously been accessible only in a fragmented way. Here human resource managers will find solid and relevant research supported by practical examples and guidelines." --Morley Katz, President, Management Matters, Inc.
"A handy book to consult for a state-of-the-art introduction and discussion of current trends in the field of executive education. Leadership By Design will attract the attention of human resource professionals and others involved in the design and delivery of management development programs. Vicere and Fulmer offer timely, pragmatic advice about fundamental aspects of choosing vendors and locales as well as program goals and methods." --Frank Cespedes, Managing Partner, Center for Executive Development
