Skipping many of the old standbys, this unusual (if not unique) listing contains potential canine appellations from such diverse sources as literature, history, geography, and cuisine. The book tends to ignore common dog names in favor of more distinctive monikers. Some of the names are really too long to serve as call names, but these longer names are still choices for those seeking a more formal name or one to use in the official registration of their dogs. The authors include short, sometimes humorous comments on each name, often giving the source or definition for that selection. The one substantial omission is a pronunciation guide, as many of the names are from foreign sources. While certainly not an essential reference, this inexpensive volume will serve as both a menu of name choices and a springboard to creative thinking for those searching for just the right name for their special pet.
