Gr 2-4 Bonnici succeeds in giving geographical and cultural information while telling endearing stories in these two portraits of Indian village life as seen through the eyes of a young boy. The young hero, Arjuna, is an individual with whom young readers can easily identify. Kopper's detailed sepia, blue and black pictures bring the scenes to life and provide depth to Bonnici's expressive text. Together they have created a series which should help American children gain understanding and empathy for another culture. A useful feature at the end of both books is the inclusion of notes and definitions to aid understanding. Eunice Weech, M. L. King Elementary School, Urbana, Ill.
