Grade 4-8-- The Oregon coastline is the primary focus of this book that explains the geophysical phenomena called sand dunes. Coverage is comprehensive; the format is attractive; and each page is illustrated with a full-color, captioned photograph. Beginning with an introduction to the formation of sand and its properties, this presentation provides general information about dunes world - wide as an integral part of the discussion of contrasts and comparisons with the salient features of the Oregon sand dunes. Explanations of specific formations such as the star, parabola, and barchan dunes are made clear through the use of charts showing wind directions and other influences of the elements. Important terms are in boldface in the text and defined in the glossary. The growth and replacement of indigenous species of plant life on the Oregon dunes are also discussed. Sand dunes are a timely subject in our ecologically concerned world, and Bannan's coverage is absorbing and appealing.
