Grade 4-6-- Focusing on the red ant species Formica polyctena , the Fischer-Nagels discuss the physical and behavioral characteristics of workers, males, and queens and the various functions each must perform for their colony's survival. They examine the formation of a new colony by a young queen, the construction of an anthill, and the day-to-day operations carried out by workers. The text also describes basic ant anatomy, the stages of development, defense mechanisms, and natural enemies. Sharp color photographs, most of which are greatly enlarged, accompany the text on almost every page. The book is well organized, concisely written, and lavishly illustrated; however, : the lack of picture captions is an inexplicable flaw in this generally excellent introduction. While the text explains what is happening in a half-dozen or so of the photos, most of the ant activities can only be ascertained after a close reading. Another omission, albeit minor, is that the scientific term metamorphosis is not mentioned although the process is described. Overbeck's Ants (Lerner, 1982), also distinguished by excellent color photography, presents similar information on the insects' life cycle and behavior. The Fischer-Nagel photos, however, are larger, more numerous, and convey a clearer sense of the ants' lives inside the anthill.
