Grade 2-5-- Siobhan McNulty, an appealing ten-year-old from Belfast, has come to New Jersey to spend six weeks with an American family under the auspices of Project Children. Founded in 1975, this organization brings children from troubled Northern Ireland to the United States during the summertime. Siobhan's first-person narration reveals insightful contrasts between the two cultures: she notes all the seemingly friendly police at the Fourth of July parade and remarks that, " 'It's grand that the police in America don't carry rifles.' " Sharp, attractive, uncaptioned full-color photos in a variety of layouts accompany the account of Siobhan's visit. A fine tribute to a most worthy cultural exchange program. --Diane S.
