Aardvarks, hippos, lions and other animals appear in a young girl's room, causing chaos and amusement and--in rhyme and colorful pictures--teach young readers how to count.

PreSchool-Grade 1-- A pleasant concept book (counting in reverse order) in which a young black child offers excuses as to why her house is a shambles. From 10 aardvarks raiding the fridge to 2 monkeys rummaging in her toys, the animals romp through the exuberant rhyming text and colorful, childlike crayon illustrations. Of course, when she's confronted by her mother, all of the perpetrators have vanished and only a single sleeping kitten remains. All of the different creatures can be found around the child's room in the last two double-page speads, but only as toys, lamps, or drawings. Youngsters will relate to the wishful blame-placing, the bright illustrations, and the lilting rhyme. Predictable and pleasurable in its simplicity. --Mollie Bynum, Chester Valley Elementary School, Anchorage, AK
