Gr. 1-3. The fifth entry in the A Question of Science series, this book zeros in on yet another element of the night skies: comets. Using a question-and-answer technique, the text explores just the kinds of basic issues children ponder. Readers learn about the identification of comets, occurrences in history and their documentation, returning comets, famous astronomers, the study of comets by spaceships, and the acknowledgment that there is still much to understand in the field, Definitions for bold-faced vocabulary words, which are sprinkled throughout the text, appear in the glossary. The illustrations are an unusual combination of colored, cartoon-type drawings with conversation bubbles and black-and-white and color photographs. The resulting overall appearance is sometimes chaotic and busy, which can be a distraction for the intended age group.
