About This Book The Parents' Complete-Special Education Guide has been developed to help all parents of disabled children survive the myriad rules and regulations surrounding the educational, social, vocational, and environmental needs of their children. Many texts are filled with theories, but very little practical advice. From our combined experience of 50 years in special education services, we have come to realize the need that all parents have for a wide variety of important and pertinent information that can be obtained at a moment's notice. This book is organized to give parents that wealth of practical advice.

Many parents of disabled children do not have the perspective of the entire special education process as well as the specific knowledge and tools required at each stage. Awareness of this global concept of special education allows parents to fulfill the requirements for any experience that they may encounter. Filled with practical tools and suggestions, the book takes parents through the various stages required in understanding the processes of early childhood intervention, procedures for school-aged disabled youngsters, how to work with the special education process, placement, Committees on Preschool Special Education and Committees on Special Education, individual educational plans, and practical educational law. It also contains many useful tables and charts.

It is the responsibility of parents of a disabled child to keep themselves abreast of the latest educational processes which involve their children. Having one book that provides all the necessary survival skills can only facilitate the process of assuring that your child receives the best and most appropriate education available in the least-restrictive environment.

How to Use This Book

Parents who are interested in becoming proactive in their child's educational process from preschool through college will find this guide invaluable because of the practical assistance offered through every phase of their child's educational development. The Parents' Complete Special-Education Guide can be referred to by parents seeking assistance or guidance for their child from birth to adulthood. Each section of the book enables parents to feel more secure and informed about the sometimes overwhelming process of special education. For example, if a parent is concerned about what to do at a CSE meeting, the chapter on How to prepare for an Initial CSE Meeting will give step-by-step instructions concerning questions to ask, materials to bring, what to expect, and so forth.

From our experience we know that the "aging-out" process and what to do with special education children after 21 is a major concern and fear for all parents. This real issue is covered in the section entitled Post-High School Services for the Disabled, and offers readers alternatives, organizations, forms, materials, and informational resources so that the process can begin before the age of 21 and have positive results.

The section on How to Examine School Records provides parents who wish to examine school records with step-by-step directions on what to ask for, who to contact, legal rights, and how to interpret what they have in front of them.

Practical parenting tools so important to parents of special-education children, are provided in useful, easy-to-understand terms and suggestions in the section Practical Parenting Tools for Parents of Disabled Children.

In closing, here is an information-packed handbook that you can bring to meetings or refer to on an as-needed basis that offers you expertise in dealing with every facet of the special education process.

Product Description Discusses the rules and regulations involved in the special education process From Library Journal The authors of this practical guide each have over 25 years of experience in the field of special education, Pierangelo as a classroom teacher, psychologist, and administrator, Jacoby as a special education teacher and school principal. They open with a discussion of child development, screening procedures for suspected disabilities, and early (preschool) intervention. In subsequent chapters, they describe individual education plans, related counseling and therapy services, and 12 major types of disability. To conclude, the authors deal with common medication information, practical parenting suggestions, and the transition of special students to adult life. The five appendixes contain a wealth of information, including a glossary of special education terms, forms used by the Committee on Special Education, organizations and publications for special children, and various types of special education tests. Their guide gives parents all the pertinent information they need to navigate the many rules and regulations involved in the special education process.
