David Brownlee is professor of the history of art at the University of Pennsylvania. David De Long is professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Kathryn B. Hiesinger is curator of European decorative arts at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
This is the catalog for an exhibition originating at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and traveling to the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla, CA, and the Heinz Architectural Center in Pittsburgh. Brownlee (art history, Univ. of Pennsylvania), David De Long (architecture, Univ. of Pennsylvania), and Kathryn B. Hiesinger (curator of European decorative arts, Philadelphia Museum of Arts) discuss the the accomplishments of Venturi, Scott Brown, & Associates (originally Venturi, Rauch, and Scott Brown), as well as relevant decorative arts, along with drawings and color plates. Two of the most valuable sections are the chronology and the project list, which includes 400 projects designed by "Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and their associates" (sorry, Rauch) between 1957 and 2000. Unfortunately, as is typical of many exhibition catalogs, the text is too big and the pictures are too small. In addition, the book is extravagant in tone, claiming, for instance, that the Trubek and Wislocki Houses are "two of the most distinctive buildings of the twentieth century." However, because it documents a major architectural firm, this book must be recommended for all architectural collections. Two books by Stanislaus Von Moos Venturi, Rauch, and Scott Brown: Buildings and Projects (o.p.) and Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates: Buildings and Projects, 1986-1998 (LJ 2/15/00) provide better pictures and a less indulgent text. Softcover. Condition: Good. This book, with its worn spine, annotated pages, and rich history, is a prime example of how second-hand literature can offer more than just a story. It provides a tangible connection to the past, a glimpse into the lives of previous readers, and a practical resource for current ones. Despite its imperfections, or perhaps because of them, this book stands as a valuable and meaningful addition to any reader\'s collection. By embracing its condition and the journey it represents, we can appreciate the deeper narrative that extends beyond its written words. Seller Inventory # AMPLE0876331487

The catalogue from the exhibition showing designs, plans, and finished products of this venerable team; includes chronologies of both architect/artists. Exhibition held at Philadelphia Museum of Art, June 10, 2001 to Aug. 5, 2001, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, June 2, 2002 to Sept. 8, 2002, the Heinz Architectural Center, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Nov. 7, 2002 to Feb. 3, 2003. The extraordinary architectural achievements of Robert Venturi, Denise Scott Brown, and their associates have left an indelible mark on the history of architecture. This engaging book provides a critical retrospective of their architecture, urbanism, and design, ranging from the Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery in London to the revitalization of Washington Avenue in Miami to the group of historically inspired chairs for Knoll. Filled with handsome color plates, many illustrating a variety of energetic drawings, the book shows the diversity of the firm's creative output and the singularity of the architects' vision. This book accompanies an exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and includes two critical essays on the firm's architecture and planning projects, a historical reconstruction and analysis of the decorative arts commissions, an illustrated checklist of projects and buildings, and a chronology of significant events in the lives of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown and the evolution of their firm. --From publisher's description.
