Reviews

An exhaustive compilation of resources, this book gives helpful ideas for preparing preschoolers to get ready to read. The author discusses the debate between the systematic instruction of phonics versus the whole-language approach, and follows a developmental sequence to achieve the desire and skills needed for reading. Chapters cover comprehending stories, developing oral language and following directions, understanding the functions of print (spatial concepts, story maps, and creative writing), and acquiring reading skills. About 100 pages are devoted to games and activities for learning each letter of the alphabet, e.g., the letter "A" has nine pages about learning the short and long "A." Appendixes include assessment checklists for noting progress, patterns for flannel boards and other props, recipes, and a glossary. No music accompanies any of the songs, and the suggested reading lists do not include publishers or dates. Also, while the book appears to be geared toward younger children, some of the exercises such as re-creating stories through drama and the use of journaling are better suited to an older audience. While not a necessary purchase, this comprehensive book will be useful for program planning for libraries, as well as for educators.
