IN SEPTEMBER 1987 THE longest, costliest and most complex psychotherapy malpractice case in California history came to an end when the Psychology Examining Committee of the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance revoked the licenses of Joseph Hart and Richard Corriere, former heads of the Center for Feeling Therapy. This is one of the three published books (also including "The Dream Makers" and "Psychological Fitness") that they wrote about their methodology, which began well but went badly wrong within a few short years. On the surface most people saw a new psychotherapy promising happiness, fulfillment and utopian community. In reality there were 350 people who spent years of their lives in what administrative law judge Robert A. Neher called an "almost gothic maelstrom," in what became in essence an abusive cult. What happened to the authors has been examined in a 1988 article in California Magazine, "When Therapists Drive Their Patients Crazy" by Carol Lynn Mithers. But you'll want to see for yourself the basic premises that seemed so promising but went nightmarishly off-track by reading this, the original book.
