Reviews

This is the third volume in an epic autobiography that includes The Color of Air and The Waters of Darkness . John Sanford is the pseudonym of Julian Shapiro, who has used the name of his principal character in The Water Wheel since its 1933 publication. His story, told in the second person, seeks to reunite Sanford with his former Jewish self. His romance with well-known scenario writer Marguerite Roberts, who has supported him since their marriage, forms much of the book, but there are also Hollywood vignettes of Nathaniel West and F. Scott Fitzgerald; moving dialogues with his father; and stories of red-baiting and black-listing. An exciting book. Molly Abramowitz, Silver Spring, Md.
