Many well illustrated, general histories of rocketry exist. In addition, during the past thirty years, specific industrial histories have been written about particular rocket programs or particular company achievements in the development and application of individual rocket systems. This book, the first in a series of historical symposia sponsored by the American Astronautical Society, brings into focus the history of development of the propulsion systems, liquid rocket engines and solid motors, that provide the propulsive force in modern rocketry. Eventually, we may expect a comparable focus to be placed on the history of avionics and guidance in rocketry, but this series is dedicated to the histories of key propulsion systems.
