Reviews

Poets, as poet Brenda Hillman points out in her witty, commonsensical contribution to this well-edited collection, lie about their influences because they believe that their originality lies in their singularities. Yet who will know if the poets don!t tell us? Hollenberg addresses this conundrum in a new way"one that works so well it should be a model for other studies. She asked ten critics to pick ten poets who had been influenced by the writings of H.D.; she then asked each poet to write a personal essay and each critic a scholarly one on that poet!s relation to the eminent Imagist and friend of Ezra Pound. Thus, Hillman!s Three Thoughts on Trilogy is followed by Aliki Barnstone!s study of the relation between H.D.!s trilogy and Hillman!s own Death Tractates ; other pairings include Sharon Doubiago and Kathleen Crown, Leslie Scalapino and Elisabeth A. Frost, and Carolyn ForchE and Eileen Gregory. There has been renewed interest in H.D. in recent years, as evidenced by the publication of such works of hers as Asphodel (Duke Univ., 1992) and The Gift (LJ 12/98); Hollenberg!s collection can only further this renaissance. More than that, her basic organizing principle should be adopted by editors as a peace initiative that might actually bring the warring camps of poet and critic into accord for mutual pleasure and gain."David Kirby, Florida State Univ., Tallahassee
