Grade 4-8 Catalano outlines the history of Mexican Americans, beginning with the Aztecs and other tribes, the Spanish con quest, and the annexation of Mexico's northern territories by the United States. The book describes immigration to the United States from Mexico and the histo ry of discrimination and the Chicano movement; it includes the Immigration Reform Act of 1986. The second half of the book is dedicated to the Mexican American culture and to famous Mexican Americans. The style is factual and straightforward. Black-and-white photo graphs and eight pages in color illustrate the text. While much of the same histori cal material is covered in Jane Pinchot's The Mexicans in America (Lerner, 1979), this book is more updated, including a number of famous Hispanics not men tioned in the earlier book (e.g., Mayor Henry Cisneros of San Antonio, Arch bishop Patrick Flores, and author Ro lando Hinojosa-Smith). Another related title, Milton Meltzer's The Hispanic Americans (Crowell, 1982) is also an ex cellent book, but it focuses on the many different Hispanic groups in the United States with origins in a wide variety of countries. This title provides a good up date. Louise Yarian Zwick, Houston Public Library
